How to Hook Up a Phone Line From an Outside Box
Here are some more pictures of an original CarterFone click to see a bigger version: He says his is an acoustic coupler with a twist, a bar that both opens the line and dials the number. A standard set is placed in a tray, and a bar goes over the switchhook cradle. The mobile user had a telephone dial that pulsed a tone, this pulsed the bar and thus dialed the number. The radios were half-duplex, this is to say, you could talk or listen, one or the other. The middle page includes a picture of an IMTS type phone sitting on the “hump” by the front seat of a Cadillac RCCs usually also offered pager beeper service, before the Phone Companies got into it.. In the ’60s through the ’70’s an acoustic coupler was often used for data usually baud, per Ed Cummings , by placing a regular telephone’s handset into rubber cups the acoustic coupler. Beeps from the other end of the line would be changed into serial data going into some kind of computer. Serial data from the local computer was changed into beeps and transmitted to the other end of the line.
I have a mig welder and a telephone pole but all I have are plastic coat hangers. I really have to agree with Lazy Glen – running around with our hands flapping in front of us, being Safety Superintendants For The World – kind of like helicopter parenting. I am not a mechanic and would never try this but was curious to see how this was done.

Each pair consists of a solid colored wire and a white wire with a stripe of the same color. The pairs are twisted together. To maintain reliability on Ethernet, you should not untwist them any more than necessary like about 1 cm. I strip about 1″ of jacket off, then separate the wires in order, pinching firmly between thumb and finger, while bending back and forth and mashing. There are two wiring standards for these cables, called “T A” and T B” They differ only in connection sequence, not in use of the various colors.
The illustration shown is for T B. The other two pairs, Brown and Blue, can be used for a second Ethernet line or for phone connections. Note that the Blue pair is on the center pins and conveniently corresponds to the Red and Green pair in a normal phone line. The connections shown are specifically for an RJ45 plug the thing on the end of the wire.

Telephone tapping (also wire tapping or wiretapping in American English) is the monitoring of telephone and Internet conversations by a third party, often by covert means. The wire tap received its name because, historically, the monitoring connection was an actual electrical tap on the telephone line.
Gazing at Stars and ‘Home Runs’ It’s important that you understand the concept of Star Wiring topology sometimes called home-run wiring before you start. All LAN wiring uses a star topology. Star or home-run wiring means that each access point wall-plate is directly run back to a central or home location normally in the basement or where the telephone service enters the premises with no breaks. Many, if not most, older premises and even quite recent ones use multi-drop telephone wiring which allows multiple phone access points on a single cable run.
Diagram 1 illustrates the differences in wiring topologies. Diagram 1 – Star vs Multi-drop wiring Equipment – Cables and Connectors This section provides some notes about what type of cables and connectors you can use. Today you should be using Category 5e wiring which is typically competitively priced.

Instead of calling the phone company to request their services, try installing the new phone jack yourself. Assess your room and think about the best path for the phone wires. If you need a new phone jack on the opposite side of the room from your existing jack, will it be possible to run the wires along your baseboards?
I’ve been recording my telephone calls since the mid’s so this is my tutorial on various ways to record your phone calls. There are a lot of different reasons you might want to record your phone calls.
At first glance all the colored wires associated with your telephone wiring may seem confusing. Although there is an industry standard for use of the colored conductors, the truth is any two conductors regardless of their color will work as long as the same two are hooked up at each end. Having said that I do recommend that whenever it is possible, stay with the industry standard color code.
Standard Telephone Wiring Color Code. There is a possibility of two color codes that you may find in your home, I will cover both of them but only up to a 4 pair cable which consists of 8 conductors. The cable in your home may consist of only 2 pairs, 3 pairs or may be a 4 pair cable. Even though larger cables are made, it is unlikely that you would find them in your home.

Subscribers hear a different-sounding dialtone in a step-by-step call. Problems playing this file? A characteristic of electromechanical switching equipment is that the maintenance staff could hear the mechanical clattering of Strowgers, panel switches or crossbar relays. Most Bell System central offices were housed in reinforced concrete buildings with concrete ceilings and floors. In rural areas some smaller switching facilities, such as community dial offices CDOs , were housed in prefabricated metal buildings.
These facilities almost always had concrete floors.
The Phone Company had to make “ring voltage,” normally 90VAC at 20 cycles, using special Ringing Voltage Generators. A regular electric motor drove a magneto (similar to the ones that were cranked by hand on phones), to provide ringing voltage.
Because this instrument combined transmitter and receiver into one handset, it was given the trade name Monophone to differentiate the product from the Candlestick above in which transmitter and receiver were separate. However, as we have seen above, “Monophone” is not the same thing as an integrated set — earlier Automatic Electric phones required a ringer box the same way that their Bell counterparts did.
We remember that the Automatic Electric Model 2 was the first integrated set to come on the market some 12 years before Western Electric introduced the series. This particular monophone Model 40 is included here because it is an integrated set and it competes with the WE series on stylistic and technical merits, something that cannot be said of the “clunky” AE Model 2. Obergfell of Chicago, Illinois. Amazingly it still works after all these years. I’m really interested to see if anyone knows anything about the phone.
I have two different models of this phone. One is the desk model as shown the other is the wall mount with the cradle for the handset on top. Both work beatifully and have a nice LOUD ring. I am a ship nut and while cruising through photgraphs of interior shots of the fast battleships of WWII I saw both versions. The wall mount was in the captain’s cabin mounted on the bulhead by the door to his quarters and the desk model was on a desk in the gun plot fire control room.

Acoustic telephone ad, The Consolidated Telephone Co. Innocenzo Manzetti first mooted the idea of a “speaking telegraph” or telephone. Use of the “speaking telegraph” and “sound telegraph” monikers would eventually be replaced by the newer, distinct name, “telephone”.
There are several sections in this website that you should read regarding track wiring. This section, Part II, covers track wiring.
