Getting started frequently asked questions
In an earlier article I promised to go into some detail on what we’re doing for TV in our household since we cancelled our satellite subscription last spring. We’re currently getting our TV from a combination of sources: People across the country migrated from antennas to satellite or cable TV as far back as the 70s for two major reasons: We signed up for Bell Satellite TV then known as ExpressVu when we moved into our current house in the summer of Like many of you, we grew increasingly annoyed at the annual price hikes and programming package shuffles from Bell, but like most people, we shrugged and continued to pay the bills. Any time I researched the alternatives, their pricing wasn’t any better once you got past the teaser rates they gave new customers for a few months.
TiVo DVR Service Update Manual
Microsoft recently announced that after a dozen years, it would no longer include support for Windows Media Center WMC in the upcoming Windows The premise was to leverage the power of PC hardware to enable an all-in-one media center, capable of playing DVDs, videos, photos and music with a 10 foot remote control interface. While WMC never really became hugely popular, it has a dedicated and vocal community. Over time, WMC also added a number of improvements that extended its functionality: Despite these improvements, the focus in home entertainment shifted to consumer electronics CE devices.
The cost and simplicity of renting a plug-and-play DVR from the TV service providers outweighed the benefits of WMC, and streaming services starting around spread quickly to Blu-ray players and other devices that were easier to set up and maintain than a full fledged Windows PC in the living room.

Page 1 Page 2 I recently detailed my transition from satellite TV subscriber to cord cutter you can read that story here. The experience has taught me that, as much as I enjoy Netflix, Amazon Video, and other on-demand streaming services, I still value the live TV experience. The truth is, if you want to cut the cord but retain access to all the broadcast channels in your area, over-the-air is still the best option Of course, watching over-the-air TV channels does have its own downside–namely, you can’t pause, rewind, skip commercials, and record your favorite shows.
That’s where the over-the-air DVR comes into play.
Dec 29, · So with Microsoft all but abandoning Windows Media Center and TiVo not yet releasing its whole-home DVR clients, the best whole-home DVR in the US really does come down to the two satellite providers.
December 18, The older analog audio cables did the same thing, but they use TWO wires and the sound is nowhere close to as sophisticated. If you spent money to purchase a high definition component to “play” your sound, if at all possible, you want to use one of the three “digital” cabling choices. The playing component referred to, could be your stereo speakers, a surround sound system, a home theater amplifier, a sound bar etc,. In short, a more sophisticated sound source to “play” your sound, than just simply using the speakers housed inside your TV.
Coaxial Digital Audio Cables Coaxial digital audio cables have a good “tight” fit to your source sound component and your playing component. Sources say that over distance there is a loss of signal quality. Consult your cable source as to what they say for signal quality versus the length of cable distance.
How to Connect Multiple TVs to your OTA Antenna
For an updated version of this article click here. And even at that, the channel selection was usually limited to four or five channels in a big city and maybe one in a rural town. But, all this entertainment choice comes with a trade-off: This required new frequencies and tuners and, for the past decade, all TVs have this circuitry built in.
It all means that rabbit ears now refer only to Bugs Bunny, not the twin v-rods extending from the rear of the TV. In our case its a batwing shaped KINGJack TV antenna that can be rotated around by a manual ceiling control with five little blue LEDs that light up when you home in on the best signal.
I’ve been wanting to get a Series 3 Tivo for my OTA hookup, but with the Series 5 coming out, I think there will be local cheap (used) deals to be had. To woot or not to woot.. Reply.
If you wonder why TiVo has no fees on it, the reason is that the streaming apps are older than dirt. Amazon has a conflict with TiVo currently and Hulu will not run the live app, only basic and plus. All other apps are VERY slow and you cannot put very popular streaming apps in at all As far as OTA is concerned, it will take a GOOD labor intensive week to sort through about useless channels to get just what you CAN view as the box isn’t smart enough to discern between what is unscrambled and what isn’t.
The remote control is enough to drive a person crazy and there is NO off button. If you want to see a clock be handy with memorizing codes too as you’ll need them. You are limited to 1TB storage unless you swap the hard drive for a 3TB as it will NOT accept an external regardless of the fact that there is a port for one on the back.
TV Without Cable: How to Cut the Cord
With more alternative services than ever, it may be time to cut cable and watch sports online in HD in real time with more money in your pocket. Match the right device with the right streaming service Hulu, Netflix, or Sling TV, for instance , and you can basically watch anything from cable with many other choices available to you.
Finalize your upgrade with an over the air antenna OTA for best results. Your OTA ensures that you never have to deal with a weak signal.

Design and Setup The Tablo is a small black box measuring 1. While the box has just one antenna connection, it has two built-in tuners, and can stream or record live television from two sources simultaneously. This isn’t a major problem if you have a Google Chromecast , Apple TV , Roku Streaming Stick , or other media streamer, or if you want to just watch television on your computer or mobile device. The lack of any on-screen interface leads to some irritating complications and limitations when setting up the Tablo.
Without any visual interface or controls, you need to run an Ethernet cable to your router, use WPS if your router supports it, or go through a slightly clunky app-based setup process similar to configuring an AirPlay speaker. The Tablo also lacks any onboard storage, hence the two USB ports. You can connect a hard drive to the device to add as much DVR space as you want. You also need to plug in an antenna, which isn’t included.

But OTA can still be diplexed in to the legacy output. If you have only one receiver to connect, simply connect the IRD output of the power supply to your SWM-compatible receiver. What are the legacy ports and how do I or do I have to use them? So if you need OTA on a legacy port, just split the OTA before you attach it to the SWM, and then diplex it in to the output legacy speed date chicago il map, then diplex it out again at the receiver end.
Yes, with a caveat. The legacy ports carry only theand satellites, and really only the is used now.
Jan 11, · Would/could a TiVO recorder work to record OTA signals without paying any service fees? I’ve tried reading up on it but Can anyone tell me, is it as simple as plugging the antenna to the tivo and then tivo to the tv? weekendrider, Jan 2, weekendrider, Jan 2, #1.
The most common way is via an antenna or cable box. Since most over the air television stations broadcast in HD signal, you can get high definition versions of most network shows using a good old fashion, rabbit ear antenna — if you live in a city or metropolitan area. The first step to connect an antenna, is to find the input port on your HDTV. Your antenna attaches with a cable — it has an F connector.
The screw on connector may be a little challenging for the first couple of turns. Once you get it started, it screws on easily. If you subscribe to a cable or satellite television service, your HD and non-HD channels probably come in from a receiver that you connect to your HDTV. You have a few options for how to connect this receiver. The first step is to connect the box to the cable; it brings the television signal into your house.
You should have a cable with an RF connector on the end that looks similar to the cable you used with the antenna. Attach that to the box at the jack labeled input. Now you have a few options to connect your box to your HDTV. The simplest one uses a second RF cable. This connector delivers both video and audio signals to your set.

You need some kind of tuner the select channels. TVs have ATSC tuners built in so you will need to buy an external one. It will have HDMI output if it is a HD tuner rather than a converter box for.
This article takes you through the steps you should take to avoid the common mistakes people make when installing their antenna for HDTV. It took me years to learn this, but taking the time to install something properly will save time fixing mistakes in the future. Position the Antenna Properly Before you worry about connecting the antenna to multiple TVs, make sure there is optimal signal strength on one TV.
Connect the antenna to one television. Ensure there are no coaxial cable splitters in the line. A grounding block should be the only thing between your TV and the antenna. Properly position and mount the antenna to capture the most TV stations on the one TV. If they are positioned in multiple directions, you may want to use an omni-directional antenna like the Mohu Sky. I found the Sky to be the best small multi-directional antenna I tried, and personally use it myself.
However, if stations are situated in a single direction, perhaps a Yagi style antenna like the 43XG may be better for your situation. The Coaxial Run The first time someone installs an antenna, they typically think they need an amplifier. I made that mistake myself.

Follow the steps below, and you’ll get solid, powerful bass with a minimum of headaches. Unpacking If your room doesn’t have carpeting, unpack the sub on a piece of rug. Find the “Open This End” section of the carton, open it, and roll the box over so that the open end is at the bottom, then lift the box off the sub. Planning Read the owner’s manual and consider where you could place the sub.
They usually sound best positioned in a corner with at least 6 feet of wall to either side. Decide whether you’re going to use the sub’s crossover or the one in your receiver.

The concept here is to use one main DVR to record up to five programs at a time onto a one-terabyte internal hard drive. The cost of the DirecTV Genie system is not exactly clear, in that you don’t really own the unit; you lease it. Since I’m a long-term customer, DirecTV was quick to give me a deal to upgrade my hardware, which I had professionally installed by DirecTV in my new but temporary apartment. Much like a cellphone carrier, DirecTV required that I renew my contract for two years to get this deal, which was fine.
There’s a coax input from your dish the Genie requires the newer SWM setup , as well as HDMI , component, S-video, composite, coaxial digital audio, and analog stereo audio outputs. There’s also a phone jack, but that’s pretty useless too – unless you don’t connect the box to the Internet via the Ethernet port, which you should do. I can’t see recording that much TV in any situation; however, I would love to see if you could use the eSATA port to RAID your one-terabyte hard drive so that you wouldn’t lose your recordings in the event that you lost the main drive.
I can’t see DirecTV supporting such a rig for over 30, , users, but it would be pretty cool. You can search by actor, team name, show name, anchor, etc. Recording the series gives some key options like starting early, adding time at the end, and more. Do you want to record only first-run episodes, repeats or both?

Mar 15, · It will do everything the TiVo does, plus store and play all my music, catalog pics from my digital camera, give me access to my DVD collection with the press of a button on the remote, access to virtually any online audio/video.
Step 2 is a new DVD player or recorder and step 3 is my new HDTV in about 2 months Right now I have digital cable, and I’ve been planning to switch to a satelite system for a while now. DirecTV and Dish Network are both offering some similar 3-room starter packages. I want to get 1 DVR and 2 normal boxes. So, are there any other differences between the 2?
Do they all have the same channels? Does Dish have Tivo, or is it their own service? Does it even matter? Will the quality be any good? Can I crack open the DVR and swap the hard drive with a bigger one that’s like gigs, or would that destroy it I can build a PC from scratch so I’d know what I’m doing for the most part? The main reason for this upgrade is my “digital” cable box can’t even do s-video or optical audio, and that’s at least what I want, to go with the rest of my system and get 5.
My cable company says the only way for me to get that is to subscribe to their HDTV package but it’s kind of limited and not even that good a friend has it. So, any advice for someone about to get into satelite TV?
