7 common workplace safety hazards
There are way too many variables for anyone, including OSHA, ANSI, the manufacturer, or a distributor of these goods, to tell you when to discard your safety equipment. They cannot abrogate their duty to make rules to a private industry with selfish interests, and you should not allow them to imply they can. The Competent Person could have taken into consideration a more comprehensive set of guidelines put out by the webbing and fabric industry, or a more rigid instruction for another manufacturer that makes almost the same item. But they also tell you to account for and deduct for the use of knots in any safety system. Specific instructions for use, inspection, and cleaning that must be understood and followed accompany the goods. From the moment you open the bag the harness starts to deteriorate. The manufacturer cannot tell you how many tiny little spatters of slag it takes to discard the harness, nor how many whiffs of chlorine at how much concentration in PPM it would take to degrade the material to a given percentage. The manufacturer cannot tell you except generally and qualitatively how many rays of sunshine at what elevation that matters it takes to degrade the item to a point it is worn out or too weakened to use. The manufacturer cannot tell you the effects of your sweat components acid, alkalinity, salts , or of the amount of grit in your air, or the pollution in your work locations. Acid rain has what?

The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap was designed to help a worker overcome the potential negative health impacts of suspension trauma otherwise known as Orthostatic Intolerance. This condition can occur when a person remains suspended at height after a fall for even short periods of time. Suspension in a harness may cause blood to pool in the veins of the legs which can result in unconsciousness; if not rescued promptly, serious injury or death may occur.
OSHA requires that employers provide for prompt rescue of employees in the event of a fall. The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap allows the worker, who is suspended, to stand up in their harness and to relieve the pressure being applied to the arteries and veins around the top of the legs.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has today issued a safety bulletin to highlight an urgent safety lesson that has arisen following a fatal man overboard incident.
That is still true. However there are some hazards to be prepared for if you end up dangling from your harness. You can get Suspension trauma, or Hanging Harness Syndrome. What is Hanging Harness Syndrome? The blood vessels in our legs are very elastic and can hold much more blood than they do under normal circumstances. The circulation process is aided by skeletal muscles in your legs acting as small pumps , and one way valves in your blood vessels when you move your legs.
When the body is suspended or is in the upright position and the legs are not moving for an extended amount of time the blood starts to pool in the lower extremities. Constrictive leg loops or straps contribute to the trauma. The danger comes not only from constriction but being vertical and immobile.

Accessories Roof safety hook To provide roofers, chimney sweeps and other individuals that work high up on pitched roofs with an anchorage device AD to which to attach their safety harnesses, so-called roof safety hooks are installed. These are firmly attached to the subsurface, generally to a load-bearing roof beam.
A roof safety hook combines an anchorage eyelet — which is a typical feature of an AD – with a hook to which a roof ladder can be attached. These special roof hooks must be manufactured, tested and labelled in accordance with the mandatory EN standard. Roof safety hooks – types A and B EN distinguishes between two types of roof safety hook: Roof hooks in accordance with type A are only tested for one fall direction and can only be used when the user is located below the hook.
This is problematic in practice as the roof hook then needs to be located above the roof access point or window so that the user can hook up correctly from below it so as to be secured at all times. This also makes working at the roof apex difficult. Roof safety hooks labelled as type B-compliant offer more flexibility. As these are suitable for all directions of load, one is relatively free to position these roof hooks at any desired point on the pitched roof surface.
Once the roof workers have connected up, they can move across the roof surface much more freely.

The crewmembers were trying to change a hoisting wire on one of its cargo cranes. During the procedure the hoisting wire hit the crane jib that was resting in its cradle, about eight metres above the hatch cover. Cable sock joining the old wire and the replacement wire One of the crew wore a safety harness and climbed up onto the crane jib, with the lanyard of his harness secured around a luffing wire and walked along the jib to unsnag the wire.
However, the lanyard prevented him reaching the snag, and while transferring the lanyard to a different securing point, he lost his balance or slipped and fell eight metres to the deck below. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Probable cause The Transport Accident Investigation Commission found that it was likely that the locking mechanism for the safety harness hook was not engaged, which allowed the lanyard to roll or burst out of the hook when the crew member fell, and that the safety harness was not suitable for the intended task.
Safety harness lanyard hooked back onto itself The Commission also found that: The damaged safety hook Key Lessons Working at height is a risky activity and all crew should use suitable safety harnesses that are fit for the intended tasks, Working at height is a risky activity that must be properly managed using a formal risk assessment methodology, Attaching a safety harness by passing it through or around the securing point and back onto the lanyard is a dangerous practice that can result in inadvertent release unless the lanyard and hook are designed for that purpose.

Steps to help avoid potential tragedies caused by common hazards include providing appropriate employee training and equipment and instilling a positive culture of safety. Employers should use all available resources to learn about their obligations to keep workers safe and how to resolve hazardous situations. The National Safety Council has a team of consultants who travel across the country — and the world — to visit worksites and conduct safety audits. But no matter where each team member is, chances are good that he or she will spot one or more of seven common safety hazards.
Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that falls to a lower level accounted for 14 percent of all fatalities in , and OSHA standards related to scaffolding and ladders are regularly among the most frequently cited violations. Dankert, an NSC senior consultant based in Arizona, said hazards associated with working at height can originate from a lack of understanding. Employers may not know they have to provide fall protection, or the fall protection gear may not be worn properly or not hooked up to anything.
Employers need to identify all locations where fall protection is necessary — as well as where the engineered anchor points are — and train employees and regularly audit the fall protection program, she said. Some of those locations may be surprising. Dankert recently visited a manufacturing facility that was expanding and had added to its roof a new foot-tall chiller next to three existing ones.
